The Greater Glory of Whom?

While driving to a local destination this morning, I passed an R.C. church that has been in the neighbourhood since forever. The last couple of years has seen the good, god-fearing folks of the congregation enlarging and enhancing the edifice. Today I saw the framework for a portico to overhang the newly spiffied-up stairs leading to the new entryway.
I couldn't help wondering about the price tags attached to all these new touches to the building. I can, however, tell you two things for sure; one, they're being undertaken to "the greater glory of god"; and two, god doesn't give a good goddamn about them - no pun intended.
A being capable of creating the universe needs absolutely nothing from fly-speck life-forms that inhabit the third rock from the sun. Her/his glory already stands. It will be diminished nor increased by the puny construction efforts of humankind. The deity itself might just find some other efforts a little more to its liking, actually, than an expensive portico. Perhaps the funds needed to build that overhang might more likely bring a smile to the omnipotent one's countenance if they were used instead to help bring clean water, for instance, to the innocent children living on Canada's reserves. Surely bringing succour to needy little ones right here in the same country where that new portico rears its useless head would mean more to any deity than sheltering those standing on the church steps might mean.
When people bleat away about the greater glory of god, what they generally mean is the greater perceived glory of those deemed responsible for whatever action taken. What they generally want from the action is the greater perceived glory of those who claim membership in the group affecting the actions, and thereby exclusion from the glory of all those who don't hold membership cards. There aren't really too many church buildings built by and/or attended by people who really understand the concept of giving unselfishly; the concept of everyone sharing in the glory of life.
The deity wouldn't really care if her/his worship was led in an open field so that building funds could be given instead to those in need. I'm pretty sure that even the mightiest cathedrals built by humankind have contributed nothing to the aggrandizement of god.

Your vision of what would please God is truly a real one. I believe that not many people actually see what needs to be done, or are just too apathetic to care. Even being able to look it in the face, recognize, and speak out for this issues is wonderful. Then there's everything you do in your life that re-inforces your focus in every way you can. All of the small deeds you do, collectively, leads to the huge greatness that you bring to this world. Thank you.
