OK, so I can tell you a really good joke, but I should warn you before you read it ... you might just bust a gut over this one. Here we go ...
The UN has handed a seat on the Commission for the Status of Women to Iran! Yep, Mr. Ahmadinejad and his regime of women-hating cro-magnons will actually begin a term as a member of this global policy-making body in 2011. Dedicated exclusively to the advancement of women, the CSW's mandate is "to set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide."
To make sure, gentle reader, that you have this all in the correct perspective, I would remind you that this is the country that executes women accused of adultery by stoning them to death. (No mistake there in saying only "accused", because fair trials and factual proof are not details the Iranian judiciary allow to stand in their way.) This is the country, for instance, that declares the testimony of TWO women necessary to equal the worth of the testimony of just one man; among countless other oppressive, misogynistic measures enshrined in their law. In other words, this is a country that has no place on the CSW, not if it is to retain any dignity, any real meaning as a global commission. In spite of the fact that only Ahmadinejad is laughing, the United Nations has determined to make a farce of everything for which the CSW stood. It gave commission membership to Iran, a country dedicated to the oppression of all women.
I'll retire to Bedlam.
